The rules of Super Chinese Checkers

Every rule, in the order you meet them. This is the Super variant, where jumps have no range limit — the classic game is the same except that every jump is exactly one hole.

The board and the pieces

The board is a six-pointed star. Two to six players take an arm each and start with ten pieces filling it. Nothing is ever captured: pieces are never removed, and a jumped piece stays exactly where it was.

The rules in order

1. The goal

Race your pieces across the board into the arm directly opposite your own. The first player to bring every piece home wins.

2. Take a step

On your turn you move one piece. The simplest move is a single step into a neighbouring empty hole.

3. ...or jump

Or jump over any piece, yours or an opponent's, into the empty hole on the far side.

4. Super-jumps go far

A jump is not just a short hop. Jump over a piece at any distance and land the same distance beyond it, as long as every hole in between is empty. This is the rule that separates the Super variant from classic Chinese Checkers.

5. Chain your jumps

After a jump you may keep jumping with the same piece. One move can chain short hops and long super-jumps together and carry a piece across the whole board.

6. Other players' arms

You may jump through another player's arm, but your move cannot end there. Every move must finish in the middle of the board, your own arm, or your goal arm.

7. Goal-entry bonus

The first time each of your pieces enters your goal arm, you immediately get an extra move — with any of your pieces.

8. Fair finish and draws

Everyone gets the same number of turns. If you finish first, a player who has had one turn fewer still gets a final turn to equalise. If they finish home on it, you share the win in a draw.

Common questions

How many players can play Chinese Checkers?

Two to six. The star has six arms, and the players are spread around it so that everyone has an empty arm opposite or a direct opponent, depending on the count: two play top against bottom, three take alternating arms, four play as two facing pairs, five leave one arm empty, and six fill the star.

How many pieces does each player get?

Ten. They start filling one arm of the six-pointed star, and you win by getting all ten into the arm directly opposite.

Can you jump your own pieces in Chinese Checkers?

Yes. A jump may be over any piece, your own or an opponent's. Nothing is ever captured or removed from the board, so a jumped piece simply stays where it is.

What is the difference between Chinese Checkers and Super Chinese Checkers?

The range of a jump. In the classic game you may only jump a piece directly adjacent to yours, landing one hole beyond it. In Super Chinese Checkers you may jump a piece at any distance and land the same distance beyond it, provided every hole in between is empty. More on the variant.

Can you block an opponent by staying in your home arm?

Not indefinitely. A move can never end in another player's arm, so a piece parked in its own start arm cannot be dislodged, but it also cannot stop an opponent from jumping through. The goal arm is the one that matters, and the fair-finish rule stops a stalled game from denying a win outright.
